The time that every movie created, directed, produced culminates to. The time every Actor, Director and Movie buff awaits. It's the Award Season!
While the season started with much gung-ho, with favorites, early predictions, who will win, who should win (can you hear me chant Leonardo di Caprio?!)…but what I look for? Who Wore What!
The Award season this time has been somewhat dismaying. While not every actress has worn their best (and boy, do they have the best at their disposal!), there have been some who’ve been like a treat for the sore eye. So here are my top picks from the Red Carpets of Golden Globes, Critic’s Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Golden Globes 2014
The best part of the Globes this year was NOT the red carpet (...it was Leonardo winning!!). Safe choices, ok looks - as a precursor to the Award season and as the first Award night of the season, this was a #EpicFail. But not all love was lost between films and fashion, there were some redeeming choices. So here goes my list of the top 5 looks (yeah only FIVE):
Helen Mirren for looking every-bit a lady in the elegant Jenny Packham. The color looks beautiful too. She teamed the dress with soft pink lips, emerald jewellery, and a clutch with a green flower!
Emma Watson for at least thinking outside of the fashion box and wearing this chic Dior Haute Couture piece. Not very red carpet, but it works nonetheless! The blue pumps and the pink lips add the extra drama!
The newly engaged (!!) Amber Heard looked perfect for the Red Carpet in this midnight blue Atelier Versace gown. I absolutely adored this look - but again with the thigh-high slits, the messy bun and the peep-toes, not entirely an experimental look!
Looking quite a vision in a Ralph Lauren gown was Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o. A newcomer to Hollywood, Lupita has made everyone sit up and take notice - the fiery red number does her complete justice, as gold accessories work perfectly. My only bone of contention is with the designer - quite “inspired” by Tom Ford are we?!
The stunning actress with her love for Dior Haute Couture seems to get it right every time! Jennifer Lawrence took the Globe home with a lot of style. What made this a winner was the on-trend choices like the Dior Rouge lipcolor, the oxblood nail lacquer, emerald earrings, arm candy, and a black clutch with the white canvas of a dress!
Some other celebrities/looks that caught my attention (for the right reasons) were Kate Beckinsale who wore a mermaid-cut Zuhair Murad gown. Emma Roberts was quite a head turner in the black Lanvin figure-flaunting dress paired with turquoise earrings. Naomi Watts looked radiant in a simple yet effective golden Tom Ford gown, and talking about radiance, nothing like the pregnancy glow that Olivia Wilde was sporting - it did her well with the emerald green Gucci Première gown. Also looking ethereal were Sosie Bacon in a nude Rhea Costa gown and Taissa Farmiga in a short Elie Saab number.
Critic’s Choice 2014
Not only was the celebrity attendance quite disappointing in this Award evening, the wardrobe choices didn’t get any better. While some did upgrade their style quotient, the overall reaction was a “meh” at best.
Cate Blanchett wore her teal colored Lanvin dress well. Cinched at the waist, and teamed with bright red lips and open hair, she looked every bit a “Blue Jasmine”.
Wearing an all red look, Camila Alves wore a red Paula Ke knotted-at-the-waist gown with red strappy heels and hair tied back in a bun. The draping was quite flattering and brought in the interesting detail to an otherwise all-too-simple look.
Amy Adams looked pretty in pink as she dressed up for the Awards in an off-shoulder Roland Mouret gown. Cascading hair and minimal make-up completed her look.
Aussie actress Margot Robbie gets extra points for moving away from the regular silhouettes, or maybe it’s my predisposition towards all things Elie Saab that brought her to this spot for me. Loved the lace jumpsuit. Loved the simple make-up. Loved the accessories. Loved the look!
Creeping up to the number one spot with her fabulous Red Carpet choices, Lupita Nyong’o wooed everybody with the white Calvin Klein Collection dress. The simple cuts, clean silhouette showed off her fab body and made her look beautiful! The hint of pink on the lips brought that luminescence to her skin. LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Notable mention to Julia Roberts who turned it around after the Golden Globes fiasco of a dress with a Juan Carlos Obando printed gown - she looked chic and stylish, every bit of the much loved actress we all know. Juliette Lewis made some great red carpet choices by wearing red lips to match her red Zac Posen gown. A leopard print clutch and open hair brought the whole look together well enough.
SAG Awards 2014
Upping the ante (well marginally), celebrities walked the carpet again for the Screen Actors Guild Awards last evening. I think I’m getting used to disappointing wardrobe choices, or maybe they are getting better? Quite a few hits this time, and some misses too!
Sofia Vergara switched back from princess dresses to her favorite mermaid silhouette, although she did look like a stunner she is in the Donna Karan Atelier gown. The decadent neck-piece added the extra "wow" (if that was even needed)! Welcome back Ms. Vergara!
Jennifer Garner looked understatedly elegant in a midnight blue Max Mara gown. The color, the hair & make-up, and statement earrings lent to an effortless look, albeit a look great for the Red Carpet.
Sandra Bullock brought her A-game (well almost - we know she can do better than this even) with her emerald green Lanvin gown. The high slit culminating to a bow at the waist looked interesting enough and yet classic.
After the ultra-feminine pink look at the Critics Choice, Amy Adams wore an electric blue Antonio Berardi gown with wavy hair that gave her the old-Hollywood look with a twist. Love the color choice and the complete look, hair, accessories, et al.
Officially my Red Carpet favorite Lupita Nyong’o struck a perfect ten again stepping out in an aqua-colored Gucci gown. The detailing around the neckline was exquisite and delicate. Her skin looked absolutely radiant (or is it the color of winning?!). Nevertheless, Lupita looked fabulous and fierce.
Almost there were - Camila Alves for the choice of color with the ochre Donna Karan Atelier gown…loved the draping on that one! I also like the Vionnet dress Claire Danes wore. The color, the sheerness, and the open hair added an almost ethereal-edge to her. While Jennifer Lawrence wore her Dior Haute Couture gown well, it felt to “regular”. Kailey Cuoco looked beautiful and resplendent in the Vera Wang piece, and Isla Fisher glowed in her muted satin Oscar de la Renta ensemble. Loved the pistachio green of Jane Krakowski’s Roland Mouret gown! And finally, although I’m unsure of the designer, Maria Menounos looked stunning in her pale pink and lace gown.
Now you know my picks from the red carpets, which looks were your favorite?
